\nDo you remember it? We began 2022 talking about wool<\/strong>, whose softness was the perfect embrace to hug you in January. After exploring the processes of shearing<\/strong> and washing<\/strong> (you can read the related article here<\/a>), it\u2019s now time for two other crucial moments, drying<\/strong> and carding<\/strong>.\t\n<\/p>\n

\nTo tell you the truth, the first topic is quite succinct: raw fleece is dried outside<\/strong>, naturally, or artificially<\/strong>, with warm air<\/strong>.
\nThe second topic, on the other hand, is wider. Carding is the phase that, by separating and making the fibers parallel<\/strong>, eliminates all the remaining impurities<\/strong>. Such operation is named after cardoons<\/strong>, whose flowers<\/strong> \u2013 at a pre-industrial<\/strong> time \u2013 were dried<\/strong> to obtain spines<\/strong>. Starting from this these premises the so-called \u2018cardacci\u2019<\/strong> were created: by rubbing one against another, such spiked-handles wooden sticks were able to unravel wool skeins<\/strong>.\n<\/p>\n

\nNowadays carding is an entirely mechanical process<\/strong>, divided into several moments. The fiber mass, now thinned, is turned into the so-called cardoon ribbon<\/strong>. After passing under some rolls, making it even more solid and homogeneous<\/strong>, it is combed<\/strong>: the fibers are separated into parallel lines, in order to produce the final wick. <\/strong>
