The film is about a match watched by <strong>90 million viewers<\/strong> worldwide, and focuses on King\u2019s battles in and out of courts. The athlete (interpreted by Academy Award winner <strong>Emma Stone<\/strong>) has been a <strong>forerunner<\/strong>, constantly fighting for female players\u2019 rights, wearing <strong>modern, short dresses<\/strong>.    \n<\/p>\n\n<p>\n<strong>The feminist movement in the 1970s<\/strong> marks a turning point in the <strong>twentieth century<\/strong>, with women fighting for considerable rights in <strong>sportswear<\/strong> too. At the end of the 19th century lawn tennis and cricket demand female players to wear <strong>long-sleeve bustier dresses, voluminous skirts,<\/strong> all in <strong>white<\/strong>. In <em>A Social History of Tennis in Britain<\/em> (2016), Robert J. Lake writes that white was <em>\u2018a symbol of virtues and purity\u2019<\/em>, and an attempt to drag sweat stains. However, such <em>mises<\/em> soon emerged as <strong>problematic<\/strong> in terms of <strong>movements<\/strong>, and the most open-minded ones <strong>didn\u2019t want to stand it<\/strong>.    \n<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"1024\" data-id=\"14009\" class=\"box-blog\">\n<p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n1920 is the year of <strong>Suzanne Lenglen<\/strong>, the legendary French champion who conquers Wimbledon with a sensational look: <strong>no bustier<\/strong>, but <strong>bare arms and ankles, silk stockings<\/strong> and a <strong>floppy hat<\/strong> \u2013 designed by couturier <strong>Jean Patou<\/strong> \u2013 that is an anticipation of modern <strong>headbands<\/strong>. Lenglen has been an <strong>eccentric, magnetic presence<\/strong>, that conquered the status of celebrity in a very short time. Her figure, in the 1930s, encouraged the adoption of <strong>polo shirts and cinched waist dresses<\/strong>, able to ease wider movements. Between 1940s and 1960s American tennis players <strong>Helen Wills Moody<\/strong> and <strong>Gertrude \u2018Gussie\u2019 Moran<\/strong> gained the audience\u2019s attention with <strong>ruffled top shirts, shorts<\/strong> and <strong>pleated skirts<\/strong>; Moran, also known as <strong>Gorgeous Gussy<\/strong>, exhibited leopard and shiny shorts, designed by <strong>Ted Tinling<\/strong>. The English tailor also served looks for an Italian myth, Milanese player <strong>Lea Pericoli<\/strong>, who emerged, through the years, with looks embellished by <strong>pink tulle and mink skirts<\/strong>, that have been also exhibited at the <strong>V&amp;A<\/strong> in London.\n<\/p><strong>\n<p>\nThe history and the evolution of fashion on tennis courts crosses the careers of the <strong>FILA champions<\/strong>, protagonists of our Blog every month. Australian <strong>Evonne Goolagong Cawley<\/strong>, for example, who became an international icon during the Seventies thanks to her <strong>pastel green and yellow suits<\/strong>. Or Serbian player <strong>Monica Seles<\/strong>, who embodied the <strong>breeziest, fiercest<\/strong> soul of sport in late 80s: ponytail, colorful clothes, oversize tracksuit jackets. In the end, we cannot forget about another American star, <strong>Jennifer Capriati<\/strong>, whose <strong>athletic body<\/strong> has always been enhanced by <strong>flashy colors<\/strong> or <strong>white stars on a blue background<\/strong>, also present in our museum.
