\n\u2018To wear a mask\u2019<\/strong> isn\u2019t simply a physical action: in everyday language it defines a of moral hiding practice. On the contrary, \u2018to take one\u2019s mask off\u2019<\/strong> is a surrender, the revelation of something that has been kept secret. And \u2018Ti conosco, mascherina!\u2019<\/em><\/strong> (\u2018I know you, little mask!\u2019) is a confidential, joyful exclamation,<\/strong> related to the homonymous movie<\/strong> directed in 1943 by Eduardo De Filippo<\/strong>, able to inspire Italian musicians such as singer Mina<\/strong> and rock band Litfiba<\/strong>. \n<\/p>\n\n

\nWe can witness traces of handmade artifacts to hide the human face (or part of it) starting from the prehistoric era<\/strong>: they were connected to magical, ritual practices, funerals<\/strong> or battles<\/strong>. The development of arts and crafts<\/strong>, in this sense, is crucial: let\u2019s just think of the social function of theatre in ancient Greece<\/strong>, to understand it better. In 530 BC Tespi<\/strong>, commonly known as the first remarkable dramatist, encouraged actors to wear masks to exaggerate their facial expressions<\/strong> and to improve sound resonance<\/strong>, enabling the audience to perceive emotions in a better way. \n<\/p>\n\n

\nDuring Medieval times<\/strong> we have a further detail. In Venice<\/strong>, during the plague, doctors used to wear masks with<\/strong> a long nose<\/strong> filled with spices<\/strong>, to be protected from the bodies\u2019 smell and the inhalation of air: they were known as apothecary masks<\/strong>. In the 18th century<\/strong> Venice became \u2018la Serenissima\u2019<\/strong>, and at the peak of her history as a maritime republic it set up pagan traditions that would become iconic, such as Carnival<\/strong>. Its celebrations were also about luxurious masks<\/strong>: by wearing them, citizens were able to fool the Doge<\/strong> (the republic\u2019s most influential political figure) around. \n<\/p>\n\n

\nThe symbolic value of mask gets refined and multilayered with the advent of the Masters of modern and contemporary art<\/strong>. Surrealist painter Ren\u00e9 Magritte<\/strong> used to cover up faces with fabrics, bowler hats and enigmatic green apples. In his masterpiece \u2018The Scream\u2019<\/strong> (1893\u20131910), on the other hand, Edvard Munch<\/strong> froze \u2013 in the most complete and complex way \u2013 the fear of his times with a defleshed, skull-like face. Pablo Picasso<\/strong> got inspired by African tribal masks to draw the edges of his cubist<\/strong> portraits; Giorgio De Chirico<\/strong>, inventor of the scuola metafisica art movement<\/strong>, painted human beings as mannequins<\/strong>, and by taking expressions away he was definitely aligned with the psychoanalytical theories of his time.\n<\/p>\n\n

\nNext Friday, February 10, we will treasure these experiences at our museum with Su la maschera!<\/em><\/strong> (\u2018Masks Up!\u2019), our special Carnival event. Conceived for the youngest, the activity will be focused on FILA Sport\u2019s iconic looks<\/strong>, along with the concept of clothes as identity \u2018suits\u2019<\/strong>. Everything will merge into colorful masks<\/strong> designed, colored and worn by all participants after being inspired by the champions \u2013 both female and male \u2013 of the FILA tradition. It\u2019s going to be an occasion to witness a unique parade, in which the style of the Messner era meets the glamorous Borg polo shirt stripes\u2026it\u2019s a Carnival you cannot miss!\n<\/p>\n
