To describe the terms <strong>\u2018short film\u2019<\/strong>, actually, we prefer the words of lamented French director <strong>Jean-Luc Godard<\/strong>, who coined the \u2018anti-cinema\u2019 expression, referring to an external entity that almost forces filmmakers to test themselves to prove their skills.\n<\/p>\n\n<p>\n<strong>Early films were short<\/strong>, for merely technical reasons: as a confirmation of it, take a look to works by the <strong>Lumi\u00e8re<\/strong> brothers, <strong>Georges M\u00e9li\u00e8s<\/strong>, and <strong>D.W. Griffith<\/strong>. Short duration was also perfect to <strong>experiment<\/strong>, for example with documentaries: in 1922 American director <strong>Robert J. Flaherty<\/strong> is the author of <em>Nanook of the North<\/em>, an extraordinarily forward-looking movie that combined reportage with narrative elements, becoming the first <em>docudrama<\/em> film in history.\n<\/p>\n\n<p>\n<strong>Animated films<\/strong> have often been short too. The rise, in the 20th century, of majors such as <strong>Walt Disney Productions<\/strong> and <strong>Warner Bros. Entertainment<\/strong> endorsed the fame of popular cartoons, that with the advent of <strong>televisions<\/strong> made a lot of characters <strong>iconic to a worldwide audience. Movie lovers know this very well, if we think \u2013 for example \u2013 about Steven Spielberg\u2019s <strong>DreamWorks Animation<\/strong>, able to catch our attention in cinemas or with DVDs.\n<\/strong><\/p><strong>\n\n<p>\nThrough the years the artistic value of short films has been recognized by <strong>Hollywood<\/strong> too. <strong>Abla con ella<\/strong> (Talk to Her), 2002, by <strong>Pedro Almod\u00f3var<\/strong> (Academy Award for best original screenplay in 2003) introduces a female character with a <strong>seducing black and white clip<\/strong>, with <strong>Paz Vega<\/strong> honoring the work of <strong>Luis Bu\u00f1uel<\/strong>. In 2008 <strong>Wes Anderson\u2019s The Darjeeling Limited<\/strong> was projected with the opening of a 13-minutes short clip, <strong>Hotel Chevalier<\/strong>, to introduce one of the characters and enjoy the brilliant appearance of Academy Award winner <strong>Natalie Portman.<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThis year, the term \u2018short film\u2019 stands for <strong>FILA!<\/strong>\n<strong>50 TOGETHER<\/strong>, the Foundation\u2019s new <strong>creative contest<\/strong> dedicated to <strong>FILA SPORT\u2019s 50th anniversary<\/strong> and to the brand\u2019s <strong>innovative value<\/strong>, will be about <strong>videos<\/strong> with a maximum duration of <strong>15 minutes<\/strong>.
